Retrieve MacBook Hard Drive

I have a 6 year old MacBook 13" that stopped working because the Hard Drive does't work anymore. What do I need and how can I extract the pictures and docmuments that are on that hard drive before I get rid of it? I would like to do it myself if possible? Any suggestions or tips would really help?? Thanks in advance!
