My hubby's computer did same thing on March 12, 2013. I tried many things, including 75 min with an Apple Genius who couldn't figure it out, but here is what finally worked:
First of all - Do a back up with time machine to make sure you don't lose what you currently have!!!
| Try this solution for corrupt/problematic emails on your POP server...
In OS X Mail, click on the In Box of the problem account in Get Info (Ctrl-I). The Account Info window will show up and list all of the emails on the server. Highlight the "Sender Unknown" "No Subject" emails in the list. Click the Remove from Server button at the bottom of the window. |
Before trying this I also tried:
1) Turn off Mail, shut down computer, unhook from electric for 5+ minute - then reboot computer & then reboot mail. No change occurred. So I moved to ...
2) I went to online server to see that messages were actually there that hadn't downloaded because my mail (lower left screen kept showig 103 emails downloading - even though they didn't - even got the little "ding" mail incoming sound) Emails were on my Frontier web page - but wouldn't download.
I went to Mailbox in Menu and went down to activate "REBUILD" - all it did was rebuild what was there and did not download the 103 emails on the server. No change occurred. So I moved to ...
3) Went to computer of another family member and sent to frontier acct (the one having problems) and Gmail acct. Gmail received the email but the frontier acct would not download the email I sent from other family computer that also has frontier acct. No change occurred. So I moved to ...
4) Went into "home" > Library > Preferences> and found: com.apple.mail.plist and pulled it to desktop. Still it would not download new emails. Then set up new mail acct using frontier acct info - it downloaded all the old ones, but still did not download new ones. ~ ~ Mac genious was frightened that I did this but I saw it on another forum as a possible solution. No change occurred. So I moved to ...
5) Made sure the little "offline" (wavey line) "~" was not present, indicating the acct was offline, even though I'd already intentionally taken it offline and then put it back online from the menu. No change occurred. So I moved to ...
6) Did a "force Quit" of mail by holding down "apple" and "option" buttons while hitting "esc" button. Still did not help. No change occurred. So I moved to ...
Finally found a forum that suggested the "get info" and delete the Sender Unknown emails from server. This worked. I only listed all the other things I tried because they did work for some people, according to other forums, so I thought I'd save you searching all over and you can try them in any order, but if you do try them, I'd do #4 LAST since the "genius" was aghast that I'd tried this. Hope one of the "fixes" works for you.
