I have a Lexmark 5400 series printer that has not been working since I upgraded to Mountain Lion. The message I keep getting is that the CUPS Filter has failed. Please help!

I had a similar problem with a wireless Lexmark 1400 series printer. The error message said "printer filter failed". I know it was probably my fault (accidentally tried to print a document in "Trash") but don't know how to fix it.

After trying again today to print, I get a message saying "problem communicating with the printer." Also tthis is the log in the Console module:

E [14/Oct/2013:09:31:15 -0400] Missing value for BrowseRemoteProtocols on line 119 of /private/etc/cups/cupsd.conf.

E [14/Oct/2013:09:49:42 -0400] [Job 31] Unable to query ink levels

E [14/Oct/2013:09:54:59 -0400] [Job 31] Stopping unresponsive job.

E [14/Oct/2013:09:55:34 -0400] [Job 32] Unable to query ink levels

Tips gladly accepted from more astute users than me.

I only installed Mountain Lion a week ago, and the printer problem occurred. I still have random screen and keyboard freezes. I have a Macbook Pro and should have stuck with my Snow Leopard OS.
