Q: kernel panics mac mini mountain lion

Been having Kernel Panics on 2012 Mac Mini since September. Running Mountain Lion. I've done hardware test, Apple Store did one as well. Here's a list of things I thought were causing them:

Bad Monitor

Bad Monitor Cable

Use of USB devices, including 3rd party keyboards and mice (non-apple), hard drives and external dvd drives/writers

Time Machine

Connection to a Windows File Server

Logmein

DVD Fab

I've changed and/or deleted all of the above and am still getting them. Lately, they seem to be associated with internet surfing. Happens with Safari, Chrome and Firefox, seemingly random. But not isolated to just internet surfing. Have had them when importing pictures using Iphoto, using Itunes, or even when the computer was unattended and not being used at all.

I've also zapped PRAM, repaired disk permissions and more.

Here is my latest log:

I was about to ask... What all wasn't connected at the Store but was at home, so it seems Ethernet or Router/Modem is the problem. Maybe even Mouse or KB????

Have you tried another Ethernet cable?

Long shot on the disconnect & self Assigned IP...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

    10.7 & 10.8…

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

Tried different keyboards and mice, both apple and non apple. I'm on wireless and can't try Ethernet, not close enough to the router. I ran memtest (rember), first time I got a kernel panic during the test, second time all came back as ok. Running it again now.

The RAM is not factory original, could it be RAM, despite test saying otherwise?

Definitely could be a ram problem that is appearing only under load and heat.

The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem.

    Memtest OS X...

    http://www.memtestosx.org/joomla/index.php

Rember is a freeware GUI for the memtest ...

    After 5 loops, Rember reported the following;

FAILURE! Data mismatch at local BUFA address 0x00000001bc292dc8, BUFB address 0x000000028702e5c8

BUFA Data: 0xffffffffffffff7f, BUFB Data: 0xffffffffffbfff7f

So this appears to be bad RAM, yes?

    Which slot is bad?

Can I replace just the one or do I need to replace both?

Can I "mismatch" in the meantime (4gb in 1 slot, 1gb in the other)

Yes, but I can't tell which one from that.

Can I "mismatch" in the meantime (4gb in 1 slot, 1gb in the other)

If it works at all, it'd show 2 GB for that combo.

Determining it was RAM that failed is good news. At least you know what the problem is.

I recommend you return whatever you bought and purchase memory from either Crucial or OWC / MacSales. Otherwise this problem might arise again, perhaps many months or years from now, after you forgot about upgrading RAM and you will be looking for a cause all over again.

All the memory I purchased from OWC or Crucial has been 100% reliable.

Ok, so I pulled out of the 2 RAM chips and tested one overnite. Several passes (30?) and all looked good. Pulled that one out, put the other one back in to the same slot I tested the first one in (to rule out a physical issue with the slot itself) and within 5 minutes it reported an error:

FAILURE! Data mismatch at local address 0x00000001992eda98

Expected Data: 0x5674af6ee2712ae0, Actual Data: 0x5674af6ee2512ae0

Different address on the RAM from above, but still safe to assume that this is the one that is bad, yes?

Can I order a single 4gb board to match up with the one that I (believe) is ok? Or no?

PS: Adding 1 gb to the 4gb that seems ok, seems to work ok, computer reports 5gb. Haven't run REMBER yet on that configuration.

Thanks for all the help. While frustrating that it appears to be bad RAM all along, it is of some comfort that I MAY be approaching a solution.

Ok, been running REMBER now on the 1+4 gb configuration for the past 5 hours, no errors. Been using the computer while running it, no problems with KP's at all. So MAY be on the right track.

So my outstanding question is, can I order a single 4gb board to match what is working now, or is mixing brands of RAM not a good idea?
