Battery Problems Linked to Firmware Update?

Hello all,

I have a 13" Macbook Pro that I purchased in the USA in 2011. It has stopped holding power. It will only turn on if the power adaptor is connected.

Resetting the SMC (several times) did not resolve the problem.

I have attached a screen grab showing the battery information.

Do you think the battery is under warranty? Only 98 cycles and battery condition normal. Or do you think it may be the Logic Board?

Or could the firmware update I made recently be a cause? Is there a log held in the computer of all the updates made and when they were made?

Unless you have Applecare, your MBP is no longer under warranty. The battery information that you provided suggests that the battery itself is OK. I suggest an appointment at an Apple store genius bar for a free diagnosis of the problem.

thanks man. yeah battery looks fine so is logic board maybe? or software related. do you know if all the software updates are logged anywhere?

OK thanks for your help OGELTHORPE.

It really is greatly appreciated. It's been a long time since I had to do any troubleshooting and I am a bit rusty.

So the following is a screen grab from when I reboot, it's giving SMC errors (highlighted) every time I reboot. I guess the date and time thing is because it is not holding charge?

Any ideas? I have tried resetting the SMC multiple times already.

Reading and interpreting these logs are not my strong suit. Best I can tell, you have not fired up your MBP for several months. As suggested earlier, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar. I would also leave the MBP connected to the power adapter overnight and see if there is any change.

It has been in continuous use for weeks.

This morning it just shut down (whilst not connected to the magsafe). Once connected to the magsafe it fired up fine. Tried SMC reset multiple times, no joy!

Thanks for all your help. I had already decided I need to visit an Apple store, just trying to pick a few brains is all.

BTW whats behind your name? Sounds British.

Sorry I could not provide more information, but we all have our limits.

Regarding the name: When I created my forum account, I tried my middle name, but that had already been taken. Since I did not want to be John43 or the like, I went into my 'bag of unconventional names' and Ogelthorpe was the first try and it worked. Where I originally came across it, I am not certain, but I suspect it may have been in the New Yorker Magazine.

I'm now having the same problems. Despite the fact that my early 2011 MBP has SMC version 1.69f4 it says version 1.7 is not supported by my system (OSX 10.8.2) everytime I unplug my MBP it dies and an x is on the battery icon. I've attempted several times to reset the SMC with no luck. Has anyone gotten a solution to this?

i dont think resetting the NVRAM would have any effect on the symptoms so i didn't bother

all i can say is try resetting the SMC multiple times it may just work. I am going to just reinstall a previous OSX (mountain lion i thnk or whatever the previous one was that it came with) and see what effect that has.
