Q: Help Networking Mac w/USB WLAN Client Utility Adapter

Need help connecting Macs.

I have 3 Macs; an old G5 w/ 10.4.11, a Mac Book w/10.6.8, and a new iMac w/10.8.2. I also have an Airport Express Base Station. I am trying to get them all networked to share files. The thing is that the G5 does not have built in Airport. I use a Realtek USB WLAN Client Utility Adapter on that machine. Im thinking that bc of that I am having inconsistent results when trying to connect to this machine.

I have Sharing set up on all machines. Changed permissions to Read & Write for all. The G5 can connect to the laptop and iMac with no problem, but trying to connect from the Mac Book or the iMac to the G5 is problematic. The Mac Book (10.6.8) has more success, but I can never get the iMac to connect to the G5 unless I first mount the iMac on the G5, then if I go back to the iMac and try to connect to the G5 it will find it. Is there anything I can change in the settings that will help w/this or is it hit or miss bc of the adapter? Thanks for any help with this question.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), Connecting to G5 10.4.11

Yeah, I will probably give it another go sometime down the road, but Im just fed up right now. I tried to get that printer to connect wirelessly for at least 7 hrs yesterday.

Seems like what ur recommending to me is to get the laptop to connect to WiFi, thats not my problem. All computers are linked to the Base Station. The message the printer gives says "COMPUTER" cannot connect to the network due to invalid network security. But, its really the PRINTER that cant connect. I just copied down the message verbatim. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for hangning in there with me.

I know how frustrating it can be, just spent 5 hours over 3 days on phone support trying to get a new Modem, whch I was sure was the problem the minute I called, but no, they had to have me go through the non-working steps over & over, they kept saying "a new Modem isn't going to help if the problem is on your computer, & we haven't exhausted all the possibilities yet."

We did several times, on my end I can get an IP from the Modem, Ping the Modem, but nothing beyond, on your end you say you can see my Modem from your server & see no problem, so the problem is in the Modem, not on my end or your end... HOW do I get a replacement modem?

"We're trying to help you, now delete all the cookies in your Browser, etc., etc., etc..." 5 days later I get a new Modem... BINGO!

So, when you're ready to try again, just post, I'll try to help.

And yes, I did misunderstand, thinking the computer was the problem, what exact Printer is it again???

Ugh... U should have just said, "I'm BD Aqua, I KNOW what the problem is, its YOUR modem, so just send me a new one!" Ur the best! When I originally made this post I was hooooping YOU would be the one to respond!

OK, sooooooo, success has FINALLY come my way! I did not do one, blessed thing different than yesterday, and today it connected. Honest to God. This is a Samsung ML2955 B&W Laser Printer. And the thing is, with this printer, you can be doing what ur supposed to be doing, and it wont work. Case in point, you connect with USB to Laptop to set up wireless, with their app called Wireless Setting, and it will keep saying that youre not connected, and you have to keep turning the printer on and off until it finally works. Secondly, once you actually do get the wireless to connect it will still tell you that you are not connected. Thirdly, if the printer goes into sleep mode after 1 min, before you have made a connection, the set up will not complete.

I only know these things from reading the many frustrated posts here and from my own experience with it. Which is why I dreaded touching it again this time around. I only bought this printer in May, so its not even a year old. So I wasnt ready to heave out the window just yet. Tho, I certainly had cause. I just bought a replacement toner cartridge that it will not accept bc it is not a Samsung cartridge. Seriously?

At any rate, your response this morning did help to spur me on and give it another go. Thanks for all your input and patience. BTW, if you recall, this whooole thing started when I was trying to get all my computers networked and see the desktop of the G5 on my Laptop & iMac, w/Chicken VPN, which it would do, but kept dropping connection. I wonder if that's going to work now. Time will tell. And, I still need to try and get the iMac connected to the printer. Think I better go on a small vacation first! Thanks, BD!

Grrr... I spoke too soon. Will only work while the G5 is on and print sharing is on. Not supposed to work that way. Should be able to print w/the laptop when the G5 is off. Thats how it used to work. Back to the drawing board!

Well, when not connected to the G5 & not using Printer Sharing, it'll look like a whole different Printer to everything, so you'll have to remove the current Printer & add it again on each computer.

Yup, did that, but when I try to print, it says,

    Printing "Untitled"

    Ready toprint.

Unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds...

Do we know the IP of the Printer & IP of the Macs?

Yes, thats how th whole fiasco started. I had to change the IP on the printer bc it had the same iP as the iMac.

    The G5 is 10.0.1.2

    The Laptop is 10.0.1.3

    The iMac is 10.0.1.4

    Printer is 10.0.1.5

    Gateway is 10.0.1.1

The Printer message says... The printer's wireless setup has been completed, but the printer is unable to communicate with your computer

    -Reconfigure your newtwork settings.

Im not changing my Network settings again now that I finally have all 3 computers connecting to the internet & Mail.

BD, just to follow-up with you on this issue, I finally managed to get everything connected, but not in the same way that it was working/connected before. Previously, the printer was USB-ed into the G5 and connected wirelssly to my laptop and iMac. Now, the printer is USB-ed into the Base Station. If I go to Sytm Prefs-->Print/Fax, it says the Location name of my Airport Base Station. In my old set up the Location name was the name of my Network. Why I was unable to connect thru my network again is beyond me. I really dont want the printer plugged directly into the USB on the Base Station. I want that connection open in case I need to use for something else. But, that's where it's at now. Thanks for all your help.

Well, thanks, I think you want to give the Printer a Wifi Static IP of like 10.0.1.20 & Router/Gateway IP of 10.0.1.1 if it allows it, then disconnect the USB & restart the Router, then Printer.

The current IP is static as well. I used 10.0.1.5 because if anyone else tries to join my network that is the IP that it assigns.  How does one know what IP to assign? Why 10.0.1.20? That wouldnt conflict w/the G5, which is 10.0.1.2? It sees it as 20 and not 2?

I suggested 20 because it's higher up than anybody else is likely to join.

10.0.1.20 IS different than 10.0.1.2, leaving 10.0.1.5 to 10.0.1.19 free to be handed out, though likely the Router can only hand out or use 10 connections at a time.

But, why do you think the printer would be more likely to connect with that IP rather than the IP assigned? Im not doubting you Im just trying to understand this.

Originally, I had 2 computers when I set the printer up. There IP's were 10.0.1.2 & 10.0.1.3. The Printer became 10.0.1.4. When I got the iMac (my 3rd computer) I migrated my laptop system to it and it assigned itself the IP address 10.0.1.4. Same as printer. And alllll was working fine. I could print from it w/no problem. Why was that?

At the point that I tried to network my computers, so that I could share files and view the desktops of the other computers I started having problems with the connection dropping. At that point, I stupidly tried messing w/Nework Configs and I clicked on something in Newtwork Configurations that caused Comcast to drop my connection. After they got me back online I found that I could not get the iMac back on internet or Mail. It was only then that I noticed the iMAc & Printer had the same IP. So that's when I changed the IP on the printer. I thought 10.0.1.5 was the logical next choice bc when I had the 2 computers the printer took (or, I assigned) the next number in the sequence. Im prettty sure that if someone wanted to join my network now, and I allowed them to, the IP would be 10.0.1.6. So why do I need 10.0.1.5 to 10.0.1.19 to be handed out? Cant it be  10.0.1.5 to 10.0.1.19?
