Q: If photos, purchased music and videos, books and apps don't count against the 5GB of storage then why is my storage full? What is filling it up?

What fills up storage on icloud, they say photos on photo stream, apps, purchased music, books or videos don't count against the free 5GB they give you. Mine is full and I only back up contacts, calendars, passbook and find my iphone

Might be your backup if you have lots of photos and videos in your camera roll. Might be your email if you have lots of saved messages with large attachments. Might be backups of older or different devices that you no longer need.
