VLC works, DVD Player doesn't

So I can't figure it out. I have been trying for weeks now to get DVD Player to play DVD's (I don't know why it stopped), but it simply won't. Even if it's a movie copied to my hard disk, it simply won't play. If I do get it to sort of play, there's no sound. Most times I can't even get past the FBI warnings.

So then I download VLC and it works perfectly.

Any ideas...what's going on?!

Hi Eric

If you haven't already done this - try quitting the
player & moving the file
com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist from
/Home/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, then
trying dvd player again.

Sometimes, an applications Preference file ( .plist)
can become corrupted & cause problems; removing the
file forces the creation of a new 'default' file.

Yeah, I have tried that...several times. It worked once for a short time, but then reverted right back to not working. Now I've trashed DVDPlayer and have been trying to re-install it, but it keeps telling me there is a newer version already installed. I search for everything "DvdPlayer" and there's nothing there except the receipts.

Something weird is going on!

well Eric, I'll be honest & say I don't know the answer at present.

I did find a file DVDPlayback in /system/library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/ with a date of 05 April 2006 - It's possible that the installer might look at this file when it checks before the installation.

If you look inside the dvd player.pkg file ( ctrl-click the pkg & choose 'show package contents' ) then look in /contents/resources/ & locate the file InstallationCheck & open it with Textedit...... you may be able to determine what checks the installer is making, & work out what file or setting is being checked to return the error message you're getting.

EDIT

This Macosxhints page suggests that I may be on to something re. the Frameworks file mentioned in my first paragraph.

Well, that's all a little beyond me. I'm concerned that even if I get DVDPlayer back on the computer, it's still not going to work (my original problem before deleting it.) Here's the info from the Installationcheck, it's gobbledegook to me:

#!/usr/bin/perl

########################################################

my $SYSTEM_VERS = "/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist";
my $EXIT_VALUE = 0;

########################################################

DO_CHECKS: {
# If system version is NOT 10.1 or higher, show error
if( !CheckVersion( $SYSTEM_VERS, "10.1", "ProductVersion", ">" ))
{
$EXIT_VALUE = 1;
last;
}

# If system version is NOT 10.4 or higher, show error
if( CheckVersion( $SYSTEM_VERS, "10.4", "ProductVersion", "<"$path") || do {
return 0;
};

$plistData = <PLIST>;
$plistData =~ /<dict>(.*?)<\/dict>/gis;

@items = split(/<key>/, $plistData);

shift @items;
foreach $item (@items) {
$item =~ /(. ?)</key>.*?<string>(.?)<\/string>/gis;
$versiondata{ $1 } = $2;
}

close(PLIST);

$/ = $oldSeperator;

@theVersionArray = split(/\./, $versiondata{$keyName});
for ($i = 0; $i < 3; $i++) {
if(!$theVersionArray[$i]) {
$theVersionArray[$i] = '0';
}
}

@versionArray = split(/\./, $version);

my $actualVersion;

for ($i = 0; $i < 3; $i++) {
if (($theVersionArray[$i] != $versionArray[$i]) or ($i == 2)) {

$actualVersion = $theVersionArray[$i];
$version = $versionArray[$i];

last;
}
}

my $expression = '$actualVersion ' . $operator . ' $version';
if( eval ($expression) )
{
return 1;
}
else
{
return 0;
}

}

Hi Eric

so now you have dvd player 4.6.5 with Framework version 4.6.6 ( info via DVD player-About DVD player ) ?

The framework corresponds with file I mentioned previously -
DVDPlayback in /system/library/Frameworks/DVDPlayback.framework/Versions/A/ with a date of 05 April 2006.

I don't have any other ideas at present - but I will have a search when time permits...... hopefully someone else will check this thread who's had similar problems to yours.

yikes...I know NOTHING about using Console, but here's something I found. I don't know how much you need so I'll paste it all in. There are several sets of these under /Library/Logs/Console/501:

Eric

you know all you need to about Console - hopefully we can get somewhere from this.....

I was searching for more info when you made your last post, so will hopefully have more tomorrow morning ( UK time) , but meantime, one more question - You're having this problem with multiple dvd's, right?

OK, another question - If you open Applications/Utilities/ Audio Midi Setup; is the output set to 44100Hz & 16 bit? - if not, change it to that.

May 21, 2006 2:24 PM in response to andyBall_uk

Eric

a final thought for tonight- a number of people here have had QT playback problems, solved after removing the VLC Plugin from HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, then re-starting the mac.

This has to be worth a try, since your log entries do suggest something like that as the problem. Also check in /Users/Eric/Library/Internet Plug-Ins for the VLC plug-in. In either case, just drag the file(s) to the desktop, then re-start.

May 21, 2006 4:23 PM in response to andyBall_uk

Hallelujah!

You're a miracle worker. I made the change to the Audio Midi Setup and voila! However, I use external speakers and there was no 16 bit setting. But changing it to 44100 made the difference.

Now how in the world did that get changed as I certainly have never opened that before!

Thank you, thank you! I hope that if someone else has this problem, they can find this solution easily.
