I have a NETGEAR router from Orange with wireless capacity but I am unable to find Airport on Network Preferences and cosequently unable to access Internet by wireless.

Since you are using a 3rd party router, you should read its user manual and post in their forums which should be on their tech support website.
My main problem is not the router. My problem as I previously stated is my inability to find Airport on the list of Network Preferences. It has nothing to do with the router.
Airport is alive and well somewhere on my computer evidenced on "About this Mac". My problem is how to activate it.
Can you add Airport via System Preferences - Network then click the + icon at bottom left, after unlocking ?

I have done exactly that (many times). I get the pop-up with interface options offering FIREWIRE, ETHERNET 2, ETHERNET1 (my present internet connection) then a line below which it offers VPN, PP0E, 6 to 4 (I've no idea what these mean) but no AIRPORT.

I tried the resetting smc exercise but it didn't affect the problem.
I called Apple Support. The guy evidently knew how to fix it (over the phone) but wanted £38 to do it. I can't afford that so I continue on Ethernet.

what exactly shows in about this mac - system profiler? (screenshot'd be good)
have you an external drive to test booting from, after installing OS X anew ?
does the apple hardware test show any problems ? (not awfully reliable , but if it says dud, it's likely right)

Mac pro (can't recall date but it was the first of the Intel) OS 10.6.8
I have never been able to use Airport. I've tried from time to time.
I tried the AHT without any response from the computer - it booted as normal with D pressed.
I'm not sure what you mean about 'test booting'. I have a terrabyte of external drive available.
Any continuing ideas will be welcome.

I meant that if you've space, create a partition for OS X on either internal/external & install/test
but hold off on that, since your screenshot shows only software details - no hardware...
& now we know the model - wireless was optional on mac pro's

if support could do that for £38 over the phone...

The Apple guy didn't seem to think so.

yes - see the images in install and it shows the card too.
I'd think you can relatively easily follow steps 1 & 2 to see if your mac has one...
1. Lift the rear latch and remove the side panel of the Mac Pro.
2. Place the Mac Pro on it’s side on a desk or workbench where you can have easy access. Note the location where the new Airport Extreme Card will be installed.
