Q: Files not found after migration to new Mac

Hi,

 

On my old Mac, under Snow Leopard, my installation was complete and everything worked fine.

Then, when I bought a new Mac (with Mountain Lion installed) I had to use Migration Assistant to restore my Time Machine Backup, which included my Logic Pro installation.

Now when I try to use Logic Pro I often get these "Audio file ... not found!" messages (see example).

How can I fix this?

    Unfortunately, using Migration Assistant to move Logic isn't something I'd recommend because of just these type of issues... that come up, time and time again, here and elsewhere..

     

    However, hopefully this thread might shed some light on possible solutions..

    Thanks for the link! First (overnight) I will rebuild the Spotlight index and then see if it helps.

    Unfortunately rebuilding the Spotlight index didn't help.

    Because A new Mac with Mountain Lion doesn't allow to simply restore a complete Time Machine backup the normal way, Migration Assistant was the only possible option (and recommended by Apple). So I think it should work.

     

    Any other idea what I could check/try?

     

    I would like to avoid reinstalling everything from scratch (incl. that 19GB download).

    Again, using MA is often a 'bad move' no matter what Apple might suggest... in regards to moving Logic specifically (It seems to work well with other programs and the mainstream OS X applications however) over from one computer to another. There are many threads here and elsewhere relating to people who used MA and then found themselves in the same position as yourself with no fix available to them other than doing, what is recommended in the first place, which is to install Logic from scratch including all it's additional content plus any 3rd party plugins and libraries..

     

    Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear but it is simply how it is, based on the experiences of myself and others here... and while it is a PITA to do all this, it is worthwhile in the long run as it eliminates a lot of possible issues that can arise later after using MA...

     

    So, bite the bullet.... and then get back to making music.,..

    OK then I'm afraid there is no other solution...

     

    How can I make sure to delete everything that's installed

    at the moment (from the failed MA restore) before I

    download from App Store & install again from scratch?

    Deleting "Logic Pro.app" certainly isn't enough.

    In reality, this is what i would do...

     

    Because of how Logic can and does, put stuff all over the place... depending on the version initially installed way back when... (which can be and often is.. different to how it installs these days, hence the problems you are seeing)

     

    I would literally start again from scratch....

     

    Copy all projects and other personal data such as Documents etc...from your old Mac to an Ext HD

     

    Start up your new Mac in recovery mode (Hold Down CMD + R before chime)

     

    Format the System HD and reinstall Mountain Lion

     

    Install Logic and it's content

     

    Install any other Apps you have...

     

    Manually copy over the personal data from your EXT HD that you saved out earlier...

     

    By doing this, you have the best chance of a reliable and issue free system/setup in the future... and while it is a long winded way (and a PITA!) of doing things for sure, it really has proven to be the best approach in the short and long term

     

    One further tip..

     

    Once you have installed Logic etc and you have confirmed all is working well...

     

    Make a clone of your System HD via either Carbon Copy Cloner or my personal Favorite, SuperDuper! onto an Ext HD...

     

    This way, if you install/update anything in the future that messes up your working configuration, you can quickly and painlessly restore back to your working setup from the cloned image.. which is far more effective, quicker (and more reliable!) than using Time Machine....

    Thank you for your suggestion, but - though it's certainly the most reliable option - we can't go this way.

     

    We have the reported problem on 3 ( ! ) Macs. Besides Logic there are LOTS of other apps installed. We only have Time Machine backups - doing manual backups, as you described, is impossible regarding many apps, because they save their documents not always in the Documents folder, but also under Library or Application Support or where nobody knows.

     

    We need help finding all (or as much as possible) files of the old Logic installation. Isn't there a list or something? (We have "Find Any File" (App Store) to track down all files, but we need to know the names.)

     

    Thanks again for your help, which would have been the perfect solution for all who are solely using Logic on their Macs.

    Thanks for the link! Instead of un-installing and re-installing everything, I noticed that in GarageBand (which I normally don't use) there was an update/additional download available. After doing it I noticed that this had fixed nearly all missing-audio-file-problems in Logic Pro: when checking for missing instruments by creating a new instruments project everything was complete again on 2 of our 4 Macs (pre 2012 models) -- on the other 2 Macs (late 2012 models) only the following 3 ( ! ) files are missing:
    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/...
    .../Seventies Kit/    DC Tit Hat 08.aif
          (of EXS24 Instrument "Seventies Kit.exs")
    .../Liverpool Bass/    IL Btl Bass bomb 08.aif
          (of EXS24 Instrument "Liverpool Bass.exs")
    .../Steinway Grand Piano/Steinway Pedal V1/    Stw ped v1 024.AIF
          (of EXS24 Instrument "Steinway Piano.exs")

    So we copied the 3 missing files into the same directories on the 2 newer Macs, but it seems Logic doesn't "see" them and therefore still says that they are missing:

    IL Btl Bass bomb 08.jpg

     

    Stw ped v1 024.jpg

    How can I help Logic to find these files?

    You may need to rebuild Spotlight's indexes after manually moving those files into the folders...

    Bear in mind, it can take a while for the indexes to be completely rebuilt so be patient... If you click on Spotlight's icon in the menu bar it will tell you if it has finished or not..

    Try this,...

     

    Quit Logic

     

    Download BatCHMod from here

     

    http://www.lagentesoft.com/batchmod/index.html

     

    Open BatCHMod and select one of those sample files that you added...

     

    Make the settings for BatCHMod like this...

    Make sure it is exactly as shown above with the exception of the Owner, which should be your User Name by default and not Nigel which is mine!)

     

    Now press Apply... and then restart Logic and test for that one preset.

     

    If it works do the same for the others...

    Has anyone an other idea, what else I could try...? I really hope...

     

    Otherwise I will try re-downloading these large packs (on both Macs!) - according to https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3601266 which is a tedious procedure without guarantee that it will work afterwards...
