Q: User interface broken

Hi! My user interface seems to be broken. Any modal dialogue I try to open (import, export, etc) seems to never show up.

If I press Ctrl+Down it does, however - sort of. It shows the controls, but not the window itself, and it cannot be used.

I submit three screenshots:

1: After pressing Ctrl+down

2: On mouseover

3: After click (see lower left corner)

Has anybody else had this problem?

Aperture 3, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), Aperture 3.4.3, iMac 21.5" mid 2011

When there are problems with the user interface the usual first attempt to fix it is to move the Aperture preference file to the desktop and restart Aperture.

See Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics for details. Look about 2/3 of the way down the page for instructions on moving the preference file.

Hi!

Thank you for the suggestion, but I have already tried that, and also reinstalling Aperture, with no luck...

That indicates that the problem is with OS X, and not with Aperture. Are your other programs working properly?

Hi!

I haven't noticed much - only one strange thing: When pressing the Attachement-button in Mail, nothing happens. I tried it just now, because of your comment, and exactly the same thing happens as in Aperture.
Thank you for showing me that!

But now: How can I fix this?

Does this persist after a restart of the machine? Reinstall the OS.

It does persist after reboot.

What is the best way to reinstall? Is a clean disk and "restore from Time Machine" a good solution, or will that simply copy the faulty system back into place?

Thanks, I will do this. However, I want to feel certain that I'm doing this right, so my question remains the same: Should I choose "erase your hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X" or "restore your Mac from a Time Machine backup"?

Neither.

I would not wipe the disk. I would not reinstall from Time machine. I would just reinstall the OS.
