Lost and moved files

Updated OS software yesterday per prompt from APP updater. Today I have lost files and moved files. What's going on????

You've posted in the forum for Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) but your profile says "10.5.5". Which is it? What software did you upgrade from and to? What files are missing, and what files got moved?

Additional information: I have 10.8.2. I received a notice from the App Store updater that an update was available. Document files that were held in the aide at disappeared. One was still in Documents. One is completely gone. These are Word documents.

I'm sorry, what do you mean by "held in the aide"?

Do you have backups of your files?
