Do you mean add things to the desktop? If that's what you're really asking then you just need to open a Finder window and go into the applications folder and drag a copy of whatever application you'd like to the desktop. If you later decided to delete it from the desktop then just drag it to the trash and a copy will still remain in the applications folder.
Hope this helps.
But don't literally drag a copy. In addition to wasting disk space with copies, some applications won't run or update properly if they're not in the Applications folder or not in the same folder as their other files or if multiple copies of them exist. If you want to have an application or document icon on the desktop, Command-Option-drag its icon to the desktop so that an alias (shortcut) is created.
Also, the desktop is not always the most efficient place to store application icons, because it can be buried under application and desktop windows. You may find that access to your programs and documents is easier if you put their icons in the Dock, a Sidebar of a Finder window, or a Shelf of a Finder window. Or you might leave them in the Launchpad since it can come up in a single keypress or click, on top of all running programs so that it's never covered up.
