iPhone 5
Last time in Vancouver I had coverage, don't remember even having to pay roaming charges, could be different now so check with Verizon.
ofcourse you CAN, there's no law against it.
Ha, good one! I mean will the hardware of that model phone (CDMA- model A 1429) work with any of the local networks.
verizon doesnt unlock phones there for no
verizon iphone 5 is unlocked for all GSM - so it will work with any GSM carrier all over the world. (just buy a local sim and insert it)
other cdma carriers - not unless verizon unlocks the cdma baseband for you.
btw, if its a short trip - consider using texting and voip over wifi. its far less a headache.
The iPhones used in Canada use the GSM network as opposed to Verizon's CDMA. There may still be legacy CDMA service in Vancouver, but you should check with Verizon to determine if they have roaming agreements with Canada's carriers. You could also request the unlocking of the GSM portion of the phone by Verizon prior to travel.
verizon iphone 5 is already unlocked for GSM. read verizon's agreement with FCC over use on lower C LTE bands.
CDMA phones are carrier activated, so to use CDMA in Canada, you need to check with Verizon.
GSM part if unlocked by them for Non-US Carriers, will work, but there would not be any LTE services available due to frequency band difference.
For Canadian supported GSM carriers, it is AT&T type model A 1429 1428. Cheers
Thanks for your help. More info: I want to buy and use a Verizon iPhone 5 in LA but will be traveling to and working in Canada and the UK. What I'm hearing is that I will need to check the local networks and swap out and potentially cut the local sim card. Does that sound right?
yup. things that matter:
1. to use voice - only GSM is sufficient.
2. to use mobile data - compatibility is required on frequencies, APN etc. need to do research on this or call the carriers.
3. to use wifi - nothing required:)
4. you won't have to cut any card, if they offer a nanosim to you anyways.
Also, Warrantee is supported in the Country of Sale only.
