MacBook (2Gb Intel Core 2 Duo) - Trash does not empty using ' Empty Securely'

Activating ' Empty Securely' does not empty my trash basket. It opens OK, checks I really want to empty trash with the usual warning, next it asks if I want to removed locked items (whatever they are, I have never locked any files or folders as far as i am aware!) so I click on 'Remove All Items' and the next box opens with the blue bar running and information that 2,356 files will be removed, this box quickly disappears though and looking inTrash reveals the same list of files that I want to empty.

I have emptied Trash several times in the past without difficulty, but several attampts today has failed. Help!!

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Empty Securely only overwrites your trashed items so they can't be recovered. Check this article http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/Using_Secure_Empty_Trash/

If you can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash

For example, this message might appear when you try to empty the Trash: "The operation could not be completed because the item '(item name)' is locked."

First, try holding the Option key as you choose Empty Trash from the Finder's File menu.
