Drag & Drop vs. Copy Paste

Which is better to use to insert text into a Pages template from Word, select, drag and drop or copy paste? How about objects?

For text it probably doesn't matter whether you drag & drop or copy & paste. Pages seems to handle objects better using Insert > Choose..., it has something to do with optimizing the image. But that is only good for separate image files. Drag & drop or copy & paste both work well with Pages. Have you tried just opening the Word file with Pages?

Wow, I hate this dial up stuff....

Hi Peggy,
No, I hadn't tried the File Open method. I looked in the Users Guide and couldn't seem to find any mention of importing files that way. It just mentions drag and drop. Many of my students' files became frozen and uneditable. My tech expert in our school thought it was possibly because they dragged and dropped text into a template rather than copy paste. We knew nothing about FILE OPEN. This was one of the problems they encountered (frozen text).

Another was not being able to change margins or number of columns. I worked with one student's file and used everything I knew about to alter her text box but I finally had to start all over and redo her layout. Is there a list of DON'T DO'S or this will freeze text that you know about so we can be sure to tell students about it?

There seems to be no reason as to why some text freezes up and some doesn't. We know how to select outside the layout margin, drag to object, etc. etc. Does a text box have to be created first or can you just import to a blank page and then start putting text boxes behind to fill, color, etc.

If Insert Choose works better for objects and FILE OPEN works better for text, perhaps the User's Guide should say that, or even mention that it is an option.

Thanks for you quick response.

I don't think that dragging & dropping will always cause freezing. I've done it from AppleWorks & Safari to Pages without problems, but it didn't retain formatting. Copy & paste works best for text from a web browser. Opening an AppleWorks 6 word processing document in Pages retains all the formatting. Your problem with Word text could be a font issue. The Word files I get are from work or people from church & none of them are very creative with fonts.
