I just found a 3.5 mm adapter from Amazon.com that breaks out the headset and mike pins. It's male four pin with two female 3.5 mm, one for headset and one for microphone. It was 5.90 and with free shipping to Prime members. I'll come back and report if it fills the bill.
You feed an external mic thru the earphone jack.

THanks. I purchased an external mic (audio technical lapel) and hooked it to the earplug out jack, but it does not work.
Based on what I was told at work, I bought an adapter cable that was supposed to solve this problem. The mic still does not work with the Ipad (I know the mic works because I tested it in a standard digital recorder).
Any ideas?
Thànks
You can't use any microphone. An adapter may solve your problem.
See the link in my above post.
I have that same mic and it has a 3 pole 3.5mm connector and you need a 4 pole adapter for it to work with your machines. You can find them by searching for them or even pick one up at a local R.S. store. You will plug that into your mic jack and then plug the mic into the adapter and will work great for ya. Hope this helps!
You need to have a 3.5mm socket to 3.5mm jack plug with attenuation in the cable which should work
I have a Radioshack adaptor 4 pole to separate audio in and out 3 pole, the headphones work but audio technical lapel mic doesn't.
Mic works fine with other video equipment.
Having the same issue. I tried exactly what Clara did right down to the Radioshack part and I too had no success.
I would really like to resulve this so please keep me posted.
Same issue here. My Sennheiser phoneheadset (including mic and controls) works just fine.
This also appears on my iPhone 5
Hi, this is my first post so hello to everyone. I think the problem you have with the Audio Technica mic is that it needs phantom power to work properly. It's a condenser mic and so it needs a power source to work properly. When you plug it in to a mixing desk (board or console) you can power it with the phantom power on there.
I don't think that the iPad can supply the 48volts that's needed to run the mic properly. You can get some condenser mics that will work from a 1.5 volt battery placed in-line with the connector, but they might cause problems with the iPad.
I hope this helps to clear up why your mic isn't working as you expected.
Andy
I'm having the same problem. Here's what I think:
The adapter (4 pole) is expecting a single channel of audio from the mic (mono). I suspect you are using the Audio Tecnical Lapel mic that gives two channels (dual mono). If this is the case, you are shorting out the mic input and the iPad will ignore the signal (but still allow the headphones part of the adapter to work). Either get a "stereo to mono" adapter (about 4 bucks on Amazon) or get a different mic. You can tell what you mic is delivering by counting the little black lines on the plug (1 black line is mono which is good, 2 black lines is stereo - or dual mono which is bad).
Hope this helps.
