What do I have to do to solve the problem so I can tether to my Ipad?

Is this phone another of the things that Apple does not support? How do I know before I buy a phone that it will be supported?

iPad 2, iOS 6.1.2

It's not entirely clear what you're asking. Are you trying to use the phone's data connection to connect your iPad to the internet? If so, you would need to consult the documentation for your phone to determine how to set up a mobile hotspot.

Apple doesn't "support" Nokia or Sony or any phones but iPhones. However, WiFi is WiFi. If the phone is capable of acting as a mobile hotspot, the iPad can use that to connect.

Hi Thanks for your response.

I want to tether my Ipad to my Xperia J phone. When I try to connect them it says it is not supported.

I had a problem trying to tether using Giffgaff and was told that Apple doesn't recognise Giffgaff as a provider, so when the phone was rejected in a similar way I assumed it was Apple blocking the tethering again.

I have always been able to tether my Ipad to my old phone Nokia C3 so I can use my phone's data connection to connect my Ipad to the Internet.

I'm so frustrated, nothing is straightforward. Since changing networks and phone I've had nothing but problems.

It's simple I want to use my phone's connection to get my Ipad connected to the internet!!

How are you attempting to connect them?

Looking at the Experia J features it does seem to support Wifi Hotspot, but there is no mention of a Bluetooth hotspot. Different phones offer different things.

The iPad issues the message, because there doesn;t seem to be anything it can do with it. But this is not something apple is blocking its more a limitation or a non present feature of the phone.

From the Manual which I assume you've read through:

To share your phone’s data connection as a portable Wi-Fi® hotspot

1 From the Home screen, tap .

2 Find and tap Settings > More… > Tethering & portable hotspot.

3 Tap Configure Wi-Fi hotspot.

4 Enter the Network SSID for the network. Tap the Security field to select a

security type.

5 If required, enter a password.

6 Tap Save.

7 Mark the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot checkbox. The phone starts broadcasting its

Wi-Fi® network name (SSID). You can now connect to this network with up to

8 computers or other devices.

8 Unmark the Portable Wi-Fi hotspot checkbox when you want to stop sharing

your data connection via Wi-Fi®

When that is set up, you can use your iPad to look for the Wifi network the phone is providing and connect to it as you would any wifi network.

It seems to be a limitation of the phone. It just does not have the tethering option through bluetooth.

As to the speed, it would be directly related to your cellular plan, and your cellular reception.

If your phone is also slow, then its a problem with the carrier. If the phone browses fine, its possible the phone itslef cannot transmit at the full speed through its wifi connection.
