TM backup: can I use two drives to back up data on two other drives?

Hi to all!

I have with me a 1 TB/ Thunderbolt EHD [external hard drive], a Lacie 2 TB/FW, EHD, a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD, a Seagate 3 TB/ 2 USB, EHD and [to be purchased] a Seagate 2 TB/ 2 USB, EHD.

I mainly use my Mac for making HD videos using FCPX.

I am planning to use these drives in the following manner as indicated by the table below:

Drive:

a

1 TB,

Thunderbolt,

Buffalo

b

2 TB/ FW

LaCie

c

2 TB/ 2 usb

Seagate

d

3 TB/ 2 usb

Seagate

e

2 TB/ 2 usb

Seagate backup

[to be purchased]

f

500 GB, internal

Macintosh HD

Partitions

1

1 1 2 1 -
USAGE:

editing videos, one

active project at a time

mainly for camera

archives, music files,

FCP events, projects

and exported movies

same as the LaCie,

as a backup of data

intend to have 2

partitions of 1.5 TB each;

one partition for personal

data and the other partition

to back up data on the

Thunderbolt [current project]

intend to use this for

TM back up of my

Mac's internal HD

applications, documents etc.
backed up by: one partition of 'd'

by the 2 TB Seagate

backup 'e'

I would like to know whether I could do these things:

Can I use the TM backup feature in this manner of using 2 separate drive/partition [e/d] to back up data on 2 other drives [f and a]?

Further, I am manually copying files from 'b' drive to 'c' drive; without incurring further expense, can I ensure that whatever I write onto the LaCie [b] gets copied to the 'c' drive automatically?

Any thoughts, suggestions and instructions in these matters are welcome.

Thanks for your reply Pondini. This thread has undergone many changes and it is indeed difficult to for anyone to follow accurately unless time is spent [which time you have evidently spent!].

My plan to manage data on the drives has been laid out in this post which I am reproducing here:

I have more questions related to these issues and instead of starting another thread I feel it will be convenient to discuss the matters in this thread itself since the core matter being dealt with in this thread is ultimately related to

safeguarding of data, be it via TM or otherwise.

If CCC is capable of multitasking, I would like to deploy its services in my [altered] workflow thus:

1] have two 1.5 TB partitions of the 3 TB EHD and use TM to backup the internal HD to one partition and CCC to back up the thunderbolt's video data to the other partition.

2] have a secondary backup of the internal HD onto one of two partitions [to be made] in the 'e' drive, utilising the services of CCC for the same. If CCC is capable of 'multitasking' then I would have updated backups of the internal HD on two drives.

3] have the CCC connected to the 'b' and 'c' drives so that whatever data is put on the LaCie is automatically copied onto the 'c' drive.

If this is a workable workflow, then, I should not mind spending the amount required to purchase the CCC. Awaiting your reply.

Have a great night.

It is this above plan to which I have been asking questions about the positioning of the backups in the partitions [above or below] and the size of the partitions etc.

Sorry for all this confusion which could have been avoided had I taken care to prepare a third table with updated data.

Thanks Pondini for these teachings. I deeply appreciate your going to the depths of the matter to give me proper advice.

Based upon your answers I am minded to have two equal sized partitions to the 3 TB 'd' drive partitions and use the bottom partition for TM based backup of the Mac's IHD and the top partition for CCC based backup/archives of the thunderbolt's [1 TB] videoediting data.

As for the 2 TB 'e' drive, I shall have 2 equal sized partitions and use the bottom partition for personal data and the upper for CCC based backup *** archiv of the Mac's IHD.

Drive 'c' would be a clone of 'b'.

One query remains: when I erase the TM backup from my 'a' drive [the thunderbolt] should I set it to GUID?

My finished projects I am moving to my 'b' drive [2 TB/FW LaCie EHD] and if it has APM [yet to check it] will there be any problem in transfer of data?

I hope I am not wearing out your patience [I suspect I am]! Please bear with me for a while.

Yes, you might as well. APM would work, but GUID is preferred, and since you're going to erase it, it will only take an extra moment or so to reformat with GUID.

No. You can easily copy from APM to GUID or GUID to APM.

Good morning Pondini. Glad yo see your reply...seems like the first of many today!

I will right now open up the brand new 2 TB Seagate EHD and proceed to, after formatting, partitioning it suitably into 2 equal partitions, get a 'bootable clone' of my Mac's IHD. If you have any specific instructions to say in this procedure, your pupil's ears are wide open!

FYI, this drive seems to be new to me and it is called Backup Plus and flaunts that it can be used for PC and Mac. Hope it serves me well.

Had some problem initially...got notice tuxera not mounting...something like that. Plunged ahead, erased the drive and got it formatted to HFS using disk utility. Forgot to set up rather did not set up GUID and when I saw that the partitions were in [?] master boot r..., I erased the partitions again and this time I took care to click the option button to choose the GUID. Guess the partitions have been done, but one query has risen regarding SMART not being supported. Ido not know anything about smart. No, you not trouble yourself much in this matter but just let me know whether I can proceed further.User uploaded file

That's normal for an external HD. I don't think any of them support it, at least not via OSX.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T

There are some 3rd-party utilities that will read & display the details -- all you get from Disk Utility is Verified, Failing, or Not Supported.

Thanks. Am proceeding to finally get my free trial cersion of CCC to start cloning. It is 10 pm here in India, and I am not feeling sleepy. Guess once I set this going, [320 GB of stuff on my IHD needs to be transferred] I can hit the bed.

However, hope I can 'disturb' you should the need arise.

God has blessed you, may he bless you more abundantly.

Hello again, I opened CCC and when while selecting the destination drive happened to hover over the MACBACKUP partition when a pop-up informed me that Mac OS is not installed. What does that mean? User uploaded file

And, while this work of cloning is taking place, can I use the internet or should I give rest to the computer?

Hello Pondini, Thanks for your reply.

As I proceeded to schedule the task, I found I needed some information.

Under the schedule, to the left, beneath the tasks column is the button labelled RUN. What is it and when do I need to click it?

Below the 'run on' there is a wake/power up system before the task option. What is meant by this. I have checked the box. Is this ok?User uploaded file

That's how you easily RUN a scheduled task at a different time than scheduled, "on demand."

Especially if you're only backing up weekly, and you do a major OSX upgrade several days before the next scheduled run, you might want to update the clone immediately instead of waiting.

It just means that if your Mac is powered off, or sleeping, at the scheduled time, CCC will start it up, or wake it, to run the task.

Hello Pondini, I am writing this post regarding the next 'settings' at the top of scheduling the task 'page'.

I seem to understand what is being stated but do not know the implications of checking or unchecking the box which states skip silently the task when source or destination is unavailable. I am not sending the screenshot of this since you don't need it.

The next info is related to before and after...run a shell script...???? I would like to know if it is something important for me to know and select?

And finally, the notifications: what is its importance...p;ease let me know the most important benefit have having such a mail feedback.

Thanks in advance. and, if you have the time you may watch this one:

Thanks a lot Pondini. By your patient teaching I am learning a lot. So that is the function of the RUN button. Great feature.

Regarding the wake/power bit, is it a convenient feature to have?
