My wife has mini that was purchased within the last four months. The OS is up date. Previouly I have been able to reboot to the disk utility with Command+R. However that no longer works. Are there any suggestions why the command does not work? Fortunately she has a tm backup if all else fails.

Hold the Option key on startup.
You can also try using Apple's Recovery Disk Assistant tool (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1433) to mirror the Recovery drive to a USB thumb drive, and then try booting to that (use the Startup Manager that macjack mentions). This may be successful if you otherwise cannot load the one on your boot drive.
