Using Airport Extreme without Ethernet

Hi all,

Is it possible to use AirPort Extreme to extend a wireless signal without wiring it up to the dsl modem?

My modem is in another room but I need my AirPort Extreme downstairs so there's no way of wiring the extreme to it with an Ethernet cable without elaborate rewiring of my home.

Many thanks for any help

Unfortunately, not the help that you were looking for.

The AirPort Extreme can "extend" a wireless signal....but only if it has been produced by another Apple AirPort router. It would not be compatible with your DSLl modem/router for this type of application.

Another way of saying the same thing is that you will need 2 Apple AirPort routers if you want to extend a signal using wireless only.

It would be possible to have a single AirPort Extreme provide more wireless coverage by connecting it to the DSL modem/router using a wired Ethernet connection.

If you cannot run the Ethernet cable through the home, you might want to take a look at a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send the signal over the existing power lines in your home. More info on powerline is here:

Sorry, but no. Either the Express or the Extreme would need to be connected to the DSL modem/router using a short Ethernet cable.

Then, the "other" AirPort could extend the wireless signal from the "main" AirPort connected to the DSL modem/router by using wireless only.

If you do this, you can turn off the wireless function on your modem/router since you probably don't need two wireless networks. Or, leave it on if you do.
