I have a Snow Leopard disc that I installed on my iMac years ago, can i use that again for this laptop?
If you upgraded the iMac from 10.5 to 10.6, then that white retail disk will work on the 2006 era MacBook Pro.
Not if it's black or gray. If you need a 10.6 white retail disk, call Apple or search Amazon etc.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If the machine is around 2010, then use the serial number and call Apple as the 10.6 white disk is 10.6.3 actually and you might need a 10.6.3-10,.67 machine specific verison.

Will this model laptop run Snow Leopard OK?? what about Lion , Mt Lion?
2006 machine is 7 years old and is about to die as it's way outside it's typical lifespan, I wouldn't advise OS X anything past 10.6.8 for performance and cost reasons.
107/10.8 is too much for it, in CPU and graphics needs. Use 10.6.8 on it for as long as you can and be happy you didn't need to spend any more money on a nearly dead machine.
10.6 allows you to run PPC based software using Rosetta which was removed in 10.7 and later, a lot of 10.6 software is free to use on MacUpdate.com

LibreOffice, Audacity, VLC, VirtualBox and Firefox is also free
Save 10.8 for a new machine that will last and when your ready to pay for all your software, the machine you have is about to die soon.
