Lion Mail Server - Rejecting Large Messages

Hi

Am running Mail on Mac OS X Server Lion 10.7.5 (11G63).

We want to limit the incoming message size to 10MB (which we can do in the Mail Server | Settings | Quotas tab) but we are needing to send customers an email to say there mail has been rejected as they currently think the mail has been delivered.

Is there anywhere we can set up and edit an email response if the incoming mail exceeds 10MB?

Any help much appricated.

Found an alternative to doing this on the mail server.

You can set this up in the remote webmail area as a filter. Downside is you have to do this in every account.

Your mailserver should give an error code to the senders mailserver typically reporting an error 552 "Message size exceeds fixed limit" or something similar. This is then normally delivered to the sender inbox. However you can't customise this.

Some mailservers are better than others at doing this. Try sending yourself a too big message and see what you get.

For your benefit a list of typical error codes and descriptions for SMTP is available here http://www.hmailserver.com/documentation/latest/?page=reference_error_messages_s mtp
