Q: iphone 4 unlocking

hi all ive just bought a secondhand iphone 4 from a friend who has upgraded to a iphone 5 the problem im having is that its locked to 3uk and i want to use it on my provider o2 how do i go about unlocking it?

Only the Original Carrier the Device is Locked to can unlock it.

even without my friend being there and having no 3 sim??? it is a legitimate phone i do have the box and all the relevant paperwork to go with it?? can apple ot do this themselves?

See this Apple article about unlocking your phone - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5014

It says -

To unlock your iPhone, check with your carrier to ensure that they offer unlocking and that you meet the requirements to obtain an unlock. If both those requirements are met, ask your carrier to unlock your iPhone, then follow these instructions:
Ensure that you've waited the recommended wait period provided by your carrier.
Back up your iPhone.
Erase the contents of your iPhone.
Swap the old SIM card with the one for the new carrier.
Complete the setup assistant and restore your backup.
