Open your numbers document, then look in the top menu bar where the apple sits. There is a "share" option there. Select it, and under export, select the PDF format, and export it to the desktop
Thank you for the response. In the meantime, I figured out the following. There is no way to just export the chart itself without exporting the whole spreadsheet including the chart.
These are the steps I took to generate the chart in different formats.
1. I first changed the View in Numbers to 'Layout'
2. Moved the graph so that it was situated completely within a page all by itself.
3. Exported the file as PDF.
4. Opened file in Preview
5. Used 'Rectangle' selection tool
6. Used the tool to select the Chart/Graph
7. Chose copy from Edit Menu
8. Created new preview document by selecting 'New from Clipboard' under File menu
9. Next chose Export
10. Chose format for Export (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, etc) and Resolution requested by publisher of Journal.
11. Saved!
Cheers
