You'll need to contact AppleCare for help with serial number issues. Also see the "more like this" over at right --> for more details; this is a commonly asked (and answered) problem.

so I type in my original Aperture 2 serial number and it says it is not a valid serial number.
Have you checked, if there are characters in the printed serial numbers, that can be easily confused, like 1 and I, or O and 0? See this support article:
