Emoji display problems

When sending messages (email or text) from iPhone or iPad, they end up as odd characters or letters only to recipient. I have read that this is a problem when sending to non-iOS devices or to devices on a different carrier (even if iOS).

How can this be fixed? It seems crazy that Apple would expect everyone to be on an iOS device with the same version of OS and all on the same carrier...not very well executed...is there any way for emoji to display properly when sent from an iOS device?

iOS 6.1.2, This happens from iPhone & iPad

Emoji are just a font. Unless the phone you send it to as the same font installed, it will not display them correctly. It would be rather difficult for Apple to insist that everyone use the same fonts in their phones, let alone Apple's font.

I've found the best way to handle this is to use standard emoticons made with punctuation. As they are plain text, they work pretty much anywhere.
