Merging Hotmail a/c with Mail (iCloud)

I had a Hotmail account for years and have now migrated to using Mail on my Mac, iPad, iPhone etc.

I need to find an easy way to store my old mails from my Hotmail account.

What is the best way to do this? e.g. can they be exported to my Mail a/c?; can they be stored on my hard drive.

Thank you

Open the Mail application on your Mac: go to Preferences>Accounts. Click the + button to add an account. Enter your Hotmail address and password in the appropriate fields. You should get the account set up and your emails accessible (I've not gone through the whole process so you will have to experiment) and you can then if you wish create a new Mailbox under 'On My Mac' and move the emails to that (or possibly to a new mailbox under iCloud if you have sufficient space to store them - all this is likely to take some time if you have a lot of messages.

I now have my iCloud mail and Hotmail accounts visible within my Mail app on my my Mac.

If I file the mails that I want to keep from the defunct Hotmail account directly to my iCloud mail account, will those mails still be visble once I've finally deleted my Hotmail account? (i.e. does iCloud take an actual copy of the Mail).

Also, alternatively, is there a way I can just file all the Hotmail mails on my hard drive? (as I guess that even if copies of the mails can be filed in Mail, they will inflate my iCloud storage).

Thank you

For each individual Hotmail mailbox: create a new mailbox making sure it is under 'On My Mac'. Then open the Hotmail mailbox. Click once on any message then hit command-a to select all of them. Click and hold on any message and drag to where the mailbox you just created is listed in the sidebar. Repeat with all other Hotmail mailboxes. The messages are now safely on your Mac and you can delete the Hotmail account.

Thanks - all makes sense. Unfortunately I can't get my Hotmail folders visible within Mail - only the inbox and sent mail folders. Therefore I can't save the Hotmail folders on my Mac. Any other ideas how I get the Hotmail folders visible?

Also, on a related point concerning reading/filing mails within Mail, I can't find "up/down" or "next/previous" when reading an email. Hence, when I've read it, I have to close it and go back to my inbox. Is there any way that I can move automatically to the next email in my inbox? (as you can in Hotmail).

Thank you.

I've never tried accessing Hotmail on Mail so I can't answer that one. And I'm afraid that once you've opened an email in a new window you have to close it or bring the main window to the front to proceed. However if you click aand hold on the little dot in the bar at the bottom of the list of emails and drag it upwards you will get a split window where the bottom half shows the email contents: you can then use the up/down keys to move to the previous or next email and view that.

If you look lower down the sidebar on the left in your mail, you may see an entry for your hotmail that's separate from the above inbox/sent box etc. If there is a triangle beside it, click it so it points down. If you see a 'header' type entry, hover your mouse over it and click 'show'. I've seen gmail accounts do this... I'd guess hotmail is the same.

I can see my Hotmail inbox items (only) in Mail on my Mac.

I've now just have a few hundred mails that I want to transfer from Hotmail to Mail (as I've deleted a couple of thousand).

If I put all those Hotmail mails in the inbox, what would happen if I moved them into the folders (mailboxes) on my iCloud account? (i.e. from Hotmail inbox to iCloud folders/mailboxes).

Would they take a new copy, and therefore could I then delete from my Hotmail account?

Thank you.
