Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
10 Thumbs Dad,
You must restore your iPod to its factory settings. Please follow the instructions found here to restore your iPod http://www.ifans.com/forums/threads/how-to-force-ipod-ipad-or-iphone-into-restor e-mode.2790/.
Afterwards you will need to restore from either a iCloud or iTunes backup.

Restore it with iTunes. Your data will be erased but that shouldn't be a problem if you have a backup.
Try and turn off iPad/iPod and proceed to step 3 of Recovery Mode.
Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.
Diavonex, jsut curious why you are repeating the same instructions nine hours after someone else made the same recommendation.
Hook up to computer, open I-tunes and start a sync session, no need to wipe your settings.
This will unlock and get you back to the password screen.
If a sync was preformed recently is should only take a min or two.
Good luck!
hvacone, did you notice the post is over a year old and you just repeated instructions previously provided.
For info, not original repliers do not mark ther posts as solved.
My 4 yr old disbaled my ipod. Helpful advice thanks.
What happened when you followed the instructions already given in this discussion?

I followed the advice given by hvacone as previous instructions implied that you would lose data. As I would rather not have lost all my data, I thought I would try what hvacone suggested, and guess what? It worked. Thanks for asking.
