syncing iphone to update apps

I almost never have to sync content from my iTunes library to my iPhone because I use iTunes Match and iCloud. The only time I would sync would be to get movies to my iPhone. I remember when I would sync my movies, iTunes would also download an updated version of all the apps on my iPhone that were updated through the app store on my phone since my last sync.

I notice now that this no longer happens. When I sync, I get the media onto my phone from iTunes, but the apps in iTunes (I use automatic downloads settings so when I first purchased the app it was downloaded to iTunes as well) are not updating (previously the updated version in the phone would be transferred to iTunes to replace the old version in iTunes). I have to manually click update apps in the app section of iTunes.

Any ideas why it's not doing automatically when I sync?
