When the oxygen masks drop it's a good idea to put your iPod away.
Likely it will operate. However, 10,000 feet is a common industry standard since airplanes are pressurized to less than 10,000 feet. The issue is that the components were never tested or designed for a lower pressure so you never know if they would be damaged.
