Q: I am trying to upgrade from 10.7 to 10.8

The upgrade fails due the 'can not create a recovery' error what do I do in simple terms to get over this as I am not a MAC OS expert

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    How much free space is available on your hard disk?

    You may need to delete files so there is room for the update to work with.

    Did it not create a Recovery HD on 10.7?

     

    For certain partition schemes, it cannot create a Recovery HD on the disk itself. Follow the instructions in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718. Once you've prepared the external disk, you can run the installer and choose the external disk as the location to install. Make a copy of the Mountain Lion installer on another location on your internal hard disk as it will be erased after installation. That way, you won't have to download it again.

     

    After installing on the external, you can boot from that and install on the internal.

    Its a 500gb disc, with 350gb used and 150gb remaining, I really thought this would be enough

    It has nothing to do with space available. If you've ever had the drive partitioned for any reason, including BootCamp, that may be interfering with the Recovery creation.

     

    Can you boot into the current Recovery HD (cmd-r on restart)?

    There is no partitions on my Macbook basically the only thing I do with it is use it and install software MSoffice, PSE, Photomatrix, Silver Efex.  I will try the cmd-r reboot tonight and see if that is successfull.

    Thanks for your support on this but I have decided to take the easy way out and forget about it !!!.  The Macbook is running ok it does what I want it do and I was only upgrading to keep current.

     

    Again thank you you efforts on my behalf but perhapsI should have lived by the maxim 'if ts no broke don't fix it' !!!!
