You may need to delete files so there is room for the update to work with.

Mar 14, 2013 4:18 AM in response to DAJH51by Barney-15E,Did it not create a Recovery HD on 10.7?
For certain partition schemes, it cannot create a Recovery HD on the disk itself. Follow the instructions in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718. Once you've prepared the external disk, you can run the installer and choose the external disk as the location to install. Make a copy of the Mountain Lion installer on another location on your internal hard disk as it will be erased after installation. That way, you won't have to download it again.
After installing on the external, you can boot from that and install on the internal.

Mar 14, 2013 3:53 PM in response to DAJH51by Barney-15E,It has nothing to do with space available. If you've ever had the drive partitioned for any reason, including BootCamp, that may be interfering with the Recovery creation.
Can you boot into the current Recovery HD (cmd-r on restart)?
