Q: Which software to use if I want to change a DVD (VOB) to MPEG4?

Which (free) software shall I to use if I want to change a DVD (VOB) to MPEG4?

I have a MBP 17' Snow Leopard (and also Windows 7 via boot camp) and Final Cut Express 4.0.1.

I want to store the film of the DVD on an external hard drive (NTFS) to be able to see the film on a TV.

And I also want to know how to change the same film if I want to be able to open it in Final Cut Express.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Look into HandBrake.

I am not content with the quality of the movie in MPEG 4. I do not know if I shall choose other settings in handbrake - see below what I did. The movie on DVD (VOB) being played on my MBP shows compression artefacts ("Komprimierungsartefakte" in German) so I assume that the quality is not good. But why there are also parts of the picture of the MPEG4 that judder and not only unsharp pictures?

I will try to import the material from the camera of Panasonic itself which has a USB 2.0 connection but works with (little) DVD RAMs. I do not know yet if it will be possible to import such data into Final Cut Express 4.0.1. - "loggen und übertragen" (log and transfer). It is an older model of Panasonic on which it is possible to cut movies in the camera itself.

I changed some settings (see on the picture) and now there are no parts in the pictures that judder.

But I don't understand why it is not possible to change a whole DVD (VOB) into MPEG 4 via handbrake. This movie f.i. has four parts (VOB 1-4) and I can only take one of it (see Source and duration on the picture).

Because many DVDs have more parts I wanted to use handbrake. Otherwise I can also only copy the one part of the movie (VOB 1) to my external hard drive (NTFS) and watch it on my TV!

You have to select the whole video. The selection you made to convert is only 1 section.

If the DVD is broken up into 4 discrete segments that do not play continuously, then you would simply add each segment to a que then have HandBrake run the batch.

If I watch the DVD f.i. in VLC Player I don't have to open the four parts seperately but can see them as one film.

Your explanation how to use Handbrake was too short for me. You tell me that it should be possible to convert the whole DVD into one movie in MPEG 4 in handbrake. But how to do that exactly? If I convert alle four movies extra and add them to be able to see them in Queue I have to choose different titles for the four parts of my movie! Then I have four different MPAG 4 movies on my external hard drive ...?

When you select the section to be decoded in Handbrake (displayed as the TITLE), make sure you have selected the title that includes all segments. You can tell if you have selected the correct "segment" by the length of time.

Beyond this, you'll need to head to the Handbrake support forum.

    Good luck,

It is not possible to select a title that includes all segments in my opinion. That is the point.

Then there is no way HandBrake can do what you want.

The problem is this specific DVD in connection with handbrake. Not all movies on a DVD are concerned.

I have tried another movie and it is possible to take Video_TS and convert the movie as a whole in handbrake to MPEG 4.

It seems you have answered your problem. The issue resides with the specific DVD and how HandBrake interprets the data.

If you want techinical support for HandBrake, you need to contact them directly.
