I have a new iPhone 4S. I am trying to restore apps and data from my iCloud backup from my iPhone 4. I get the message "No iCloud backups are compatible with the version of the iOS (6.0.1) on this iPhone." My iPhone 4 iOS is 6.1.2. How can they not be compatible and what do I need to do to get them compatible?

Your new phone is not up to date yet. As the message says, it's running 6.0.1. You can not restore a backup made with a newer version of iOS to a phone running an older version of iOS. Set it up as a new phone, update it to 6.1.2, then Settings>General>Resets>Erase All Content and Settings, and restore it from your iCloud backup.

6.0.1 is less than 6.1.2
The iOS on your new phone is older than the one on your old phone hence the updates are not compatible.
You'll need to updatre your new Phone to iOS 6.1.2 and then restore from the newer version backup.
No one answered probably because the answer is so obvious. I went back to Best Buy where I bought the new phone. He went into Settings, New software and the iOS 6.1.2 was available for download on the new phone. Who would think a brand new device would have a backleveled operating system??? But it was. I came home downloaded the new iOS. then I went into setting and deleted all data and apps and started initialization process again, this time telling the phone to use the backup in iCloud. Voila! Formidable!

Am trying to update my IOS to the compatible version of my iCloud backup (6.1.4) but the update will take me to 7.02. How can I update the IOS to the compatible version 6.1.4?
Always update to the latest version of iOS. Unsurprisingly, iCloud does work with the current iOS. 😉
iOS7 will restore from any iCloud version made with an iOs version lower than itself. so iOS7 will happilly restore from a 6.1.4 backup without any issues.
Thanks a lot guys, that helped. Have been a bit insecure and as there is no way back to older iOS versions, I wanted to be sure before I upgrade to 7.02.
