My mac has OSX version 10.8.2 and I'm try to install an aiport express base station which requires 10.5.7 or later. Yet when I try to install the software it says the base station is not compatible with my mac version - how do I resolve?

Let's first figure out what version of the AirPort Express that you have.
Look on the side of the AirPort Express in the faint print for the Model No. and post back with that information.

Just use AirPort Utility that is installed on your Mac (/Applications/Utilities).
The airport utility cannot find any configured base stations. So I need to install the software first.
You already have the software installed that you need if you have 10.8.2.
If AirPort Utility cannot find the Express, that is another matter. More software is not needed. More troublehooting is needed.
Power up the Express for a full minute
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 7-8 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a heading of New AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on AirPort Express

Great thanks so my computer now recognises the base station.
However the set up is asking me to connect LAN to the base station - my apartment has free wifi from the building so there is no connection to connect a cable - any ideas?
As the Set Up Guide illustrates, you will need an Ethernet connection from an Ethernet port to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort Express if you want to be able to connect the Express to the Internet and have it provide a private wireless network for your devices.
The only exception to this would be if the apartment complex is using Apple wireless routers, which might allow you to "extend" the wireless network to provide a stronger wireless signal.
Otherwise, I am afraid that the current Internet set up at the apartment and the Express are not compatible.
As Bob Timmons has said you cannot use your Express. One alternative might be to purchase a Netgear WNCE2001 and connect your Express that way (wireless bridging).

Well, it's a bit goofy, but you might be able to configure two AirPort Express devices to work.
The first would "join" the wireless network there and the second could connect to the first with an Ethernet cable and be configured to "create" a wireless network for your devices.
I travel with 2 AirPort Expresses all the time for use in hotels that only provide wireless. I can usually set up my own network and connect multiple devices.....and only pay for one connection.
