10.8.3 update failed

App Store app downloaded the update fine, requested restart, after OK seemingly installed software. Requested restart again. Came up with a dialog box "Update failed, restart the system". After the system restart it lists as 10.8.2, but App Store app now crashes reliably can not retry install or see status. Anyone else with this?

Having all the same problems here.

I'm not going anywhere near that update till my current project is done!

The 10.8.3 update had appeared again in my app store, maybe due to resetting the PRAM, but even after repairing permissions etc etc I'm still scared to update.

First problem of this kind after having my imac for one and a half years, I was due i guess!

Very similar problems here:

  • Most apps were quitting unexpectedly and OS was crashing
  • Downloaded 10.8.3 from the App Store, and upon restarting got an "update failed" error
  • Now 10.8.2 shows as current OS version
  • No updates appear in the App Store
  • Tried downloading the 10.8.3 combo updater (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1640) and installing, but when I open the .dmg I get an error: "invalid checksum"

I've tried a number of fixes, including:

  • Zapping the PRAM
  • Repairing permissions
  • Repairing Disk
  • Re-installing OS X, but it goes into several "downloading additional components" cycles and won't re-install

I'm on a brand new Mac Mini:

  • Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
  • Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
  • Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
  • Software OS X 10.8.2 (12C3104)

Any suggestions?

The first sign that something was off was that the App Store indicated there were 3 updates, but displayed only 1 (the 10.8.3) update. (I had already installed it successfully on my 2012 MacBook Air, where this bug did not appear.) The bug appeared on my 2012 Mac Mini running 10.8.2. I thought, well, since it went OK on the Air, it'll go OK on the Mac Mini.

I downloaded the update, and it seemed to install at first, but the progress bar for the installation seemed to hang, saying "4 minutes remaining." I left it like that for an hour, but then rebooted by pressing and holding the power button.

The machine booted normally, much to my surprise. It shows 10.8.2 and Safari 6.02, so I'm not if anything was actually updated before the hang--I haven't (yet) noticed any app crashes, etc.

Interestingly, now the App Store shows all 3 updates I had available (10.8.3, Xcode, and PST Bridge).

I'm wondering if there are any ways to detect if the update was partially installed? I'm now extremely hesitant to try the update again since I (seemingly) made it through a failed OS update unscathed.

This is a joke. 3 times I've run the update from the App Store, rebooted and nothing. App store still showing that the update is available! Well at least it didnt screw my system. Is Apple beginning to lose the plot since God Jobs snuffed it. I remember when a Mac was a superior product, how things change eh?

Whatever. You won't get much sympathy or help with that attitude. Good luck fixing it yourself.

Well I'm sorry but the truth is a lot of long term Mac users probably feel the same. Even in the news today is a survey by Gartners that says Apple seems to have lost direction since the death of SJ! Regardless, since ML launched I've had nothing but trouble. The initial install of ML completely screwd my Mac requiring a complete fresh install. Something that any update should not do, the first versions of iTunes 11 caused similar probems for far too many.

This 10.8.3 update is a hassle for an awful lot of people too so it's not a minor issue and, while I might be moaning, it would be nice to think that some people from Apple do sometimes read these comments and "listen" to their customers! Microsoft went down this road and look where they are. It would be terribly sad if Apple does the same and things like this don't help their reputation, and as a long term loyal customer I have every right to say it.

However I do apologise for the remark "God Jobs" - that was unnecessary and a knee jerk reaction to having booted up for the 3rd time late last night!

Thank you for your post finepiks.

I have wasted a lot of time trying to fix this 10.8.3 debacle, including being on the phone for 45 minutes with an Apple rep who, in the end, could not help me. People who purchase a product, especially and expensive Mac product, have a right to complain if the company puts out an ineffective and even destructive update.
