Q: Mail password is not accepted for outgoing mail

My wife's password has been confirmed on the icloud website. We know we are entering it correctly. Incoming mail is fine. For outgoing mail only, the password is not accepted, by MAIL on her mac air. I have added new mail servers, changed ports, ect. Nothing works. The internet connection is fine over wifi for my mail and all other uses. This used to happen to me but the problem would go away. This time it is persistent.Any ideas?

From the Mail menu bar, select

Window ▹ Connection Doctor

You should see a green dot next to each of the mail servers you've defined. Is that what you see? If not, click the Show Detail button. A drawer opens. If there's text in that drawer, please post it. Otherwise, click Check Again and post the text that appears. Anonymize any personal information before posting.

The iCloud SMTP server is rejecting the credentials. Either you're sending the wrong credentials, or the problem is at the server end. If you're absolutely sure that the credentials you're sending are correct, then you'll have to contact Apple for a resolution.

Hi, John Zuill1.

I recently had a similar problem, while trying to configure my non-Apple mail client to work with iCloud.
I started with following instructions:

However, they fail to point out a VERY key piece of information w.r.t. to the password.

Sometime last year I turned on Apple's "Two Factor Auth" (2FA) for all things iCloud (to prevent unwanted logins even if someone guesses my AppleID and password).
It turns out that because 3rd-party apps cannot integrate with that the same way as the Mac OS Mail.app, the normal SMTP methods of authentication cannot prompt you for the necessary 2FA code to permit login to Apple's SMTP servers.

The net net is that even though you may be 100% sure you have your correct username@me.com (or .mac.com or .icloud.com) and you are certain of your correct password, it won't work from 3rd-party mail clients.

You need to generate an app-specific password for use with the 3rd-party mail client and use that password to authenticate to Apple's SMTP service.

You'd probably better store the password as a Secure Note in your keychain or with 1Password or similar password vault, because I couldn't find a way to retrieve the password from the apple side. :S
