Exporting to external HD in 1 file, not segments

I have an old version of FC Express, It's worked fine for years. Recently, though, when I do a self-contained export the file seems to be broken into 2 gig segments even though I've turned this off in the preference settings. I export to long videos to a hard drive that I hand off to someone else for them to make DVDs and it's no longer working. It's wroked for years, but now it's crapped out. Any ideas or suggestions on how to remedy this are greatly appreciated.

Your external drive is not formatted as a Mac formatted drive. The 2 gig limitation is a limitation of drives formatted in MS-DOS formats.

Thanks for your help. I double checked and the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended. I've successfully handed off hour-long videos for a couple years and then all the sudden it's not working. Any other thoughts?

Go to the menu Final Cut Express > System Settings, and on the Scratch Disks tab make sure Limit Capture/Export File Segment Size is not checked.

It has a default setting of two gigs.

Thanks, Meg, for hanging with me on this. That's a great suggestion, but unfortuantely that was the first thing I tried and it didn't work. I wonder if I need to trash some pref file somewhere or do a reinstall.

OK, I took a look at my capture hd and it IS formatted as MS-DOS! It's weird because this hd has worked just fine for me until the past couple of months. Anyway, I'm in the process of moving my captured files to another properly formatted hd. I will then reconnect the files and do a self-contained export and see what happens. I'll let you know.

Just wanted to follow-up and say that the problem WAS the MS-DOS formatted scratch disc. When I captured the same video to a properly formatted disc and exported it as a self-contained file and handed it off, it worked. I'm back in busniess! Thanks Meg the Dog for all your help!
