How do I move (drag and drop) the video files or import them into iMovie?

like above how do you move the video files, rename, import to imovie for it will only allow you to open them, and view the video in quicktime, or cancel.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

Only edit compatible files can be "drag 'n dropped" to any of the newer iMovie apps. (I.e., edit compatible viles can be drag and dropped directly from a "Finder" window or desktop to a named event within the open application. They can also dragged and dropped directly from a "Finder" window or the desktop to an iMovie "Event" folder with the application closed and automatically be recognized/thumbnailed then next time you open the iMovie app.

Non-edit compatible camcorder compression formats still on the camcorder must be imported using the "Import from Camera" option if you want iMovie to automatically convert them to an edit compatible compression format during the import process. Non-edit compatible files already copied to your hard drive normally have to be manually converted to an edit compatible compression format by the user before than can be file or "drag 'n drop" imported to the app as described above.

As to the renaming of files, you can do that at the finder level or use a utility app to modify the name (and/or file date which governs the ordering of named files) but you are cautioned to do so before importation as doing so after import can "orphan" file references within the iMovie app. The same holds true for the moving of event/project files or folders. Only move them from within the iMovie app as moving them manually at the finder level externally can "orphan" the references within the iMovie app data base.

Ok when I put my SD card into my MacBook it comes up and there is a folder "Private" with a quicktime symbol. When I click it it opens and it shows all my video clips from my camera. But inside it only gives me the option to "open" play the clip in QuickTime or "cancel" and exit out of the folder. It does not give me any options in the tool bar up top, it will not let me double click the clips for more options and it will not let me drag the clips. Also when I go to iMovie and try to import them in that way I can locate the "Private" folder but it is faded and will not let me select it to import it. And I can't figure out why or how to fix this

Ok when I put my SD card into my MacBook it comes up and there is a folder "Private" with a quicktime symbol.

The SD card is treated as an external drive. If the files are "playback compatible with QT, then they can be opened and played in the QT player. If they are "edit compatible" with iMovie, then they can be imported by iMovie as I and the other responder described above. If they are not edit compatible with iMovie, then they must be manually converted to an an iMovie edit compatible compression format as stated above. If this SD card is from a camcorder, reinsert it into your camcorder and plug the camcorder into your Mac. The "Imprt from Camera" iMovie option should be available if the camcorder is recognized. What iMovie actually does will depend on the compression format used by your camcorder. Since you have not indicated what this format is, I cannot provide any better answer at this time based on the information currently provided.
