Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
10.6.8 is an update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and you are running Mac OS X Leopard. First of all, you have to upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Then, before upgrading, make a backup of your data with Time Machine and/or Carbon Copy Cloner. After doing this, insert the Snow Leopard disc and upgrade.
The DVD will install Mac OS X 10.6.3, so open  > Software Update and install Mac OS X 10.6.8

Try this one. If you have Snow Leopard installed you should be able to update from this one. If you do not have SL you can purchase the install disk from Apple. As always do a back up first.

Here is the 10.6.7 update, try the kb/DI1399 link first. After you update run software update to get the rest of the system updates.
Guys btw I found a simple way on how to successfully download 10.6.8 !!! First you must download 10.6.5 click link http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324 then you can software update and it will download.. Believe me I spent 2 days trying to figure this out and had to post to help you guys out. hope this helps you guys like it did for me good luck
You don't need to do that; as long as you have some version of Snow Leopard you can go straight to 10.6.8 at the link we've discussed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
The original question in this thread was from someone running Leopard, so of course anyone in that situation has to purchase Snow Leopard from the Mac App Store and then apply this updater.
I have 10.6 installed but need to move to 10.6.8. I go into Software Update to make this update and it prompts me to restart my computer which I have done (twice now). Am I missing something? Some other software I am installing requires 10.6.8 and after restarting it still tells me I am running 10.6 Are there steps I need to take after my computer is restarted? Am I missing something? Thanks.

Apparently I need 10.6.7 to install from that link.
Yes, sorry, I inadvertently gave you the link for the revision they published: sanjampet has given you the link for the full updater.
The people that have snow leopard 10.6.3 know what I am talking about this is for those of us who have installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and couldn't update to 10.6.8 with the system update or by downloadimg it from the suppprt website my previous post is the way to solve that issue
Software Update will update you only one notch at a time - 10.6.1, 10.6.2, 10.6.3 etc.
You can download an updater directly to 10.6.8 here:
You don't need 10.6.7 - the combo updater at
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
will upadate any flavour of Snow Leopard to the latest 10.6.8.
Were you unable to download the combo 10.6.8 updater at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399 ? it ought to work perfectly well.
Follow Roger's link.
Apparently I need 10.6.7 to install from that link. This is idiotic. Thank you for the link though.
