Why does rotating an image cause it's size to double?

Okay, so yeah, when using Preview, if I have a 6MB TIFF file, and I simply apply a rotation to it and re-save...voila, it's now 12MB! Anyone know what's up with that? And this is Preview 5.0.3 on OS 10.6.8.

Use the "Export As" command. Otherwise it will save the "Original" and the new "Version" (the rotated one).

Sorry for the confusion. I made the assumption using the Mountain Lion version of Preview.

For the Snow Leopard version, use "Save As" then select Compression: PackBits, and uncheck Alpha.

You should then see that File Size will return to the before rotation version.

Or, like you've discovered, use another Photo editior that can strip away the added information.
