My iMac died. I had backed up to an external HD via Time Machine. How can I recover this data on my MacBook?
What exactly do you want to do? Is the MB already set up, and you want to recover just certain files? Or are you setting up a new machine?
I had an iMac which used an external drive to back up to TM. The iMac is now dead. I wish to recover the data that is on the external HD. I have an older (Mac OSX 10.7.4) MB. If I connect the TM external HD to the MB is there anyway I can get the TM data to the MB. I tried option clicking the TM in System preferences but no TM is shown. I never used TM on the MB
Hold down the option key and select
Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. The menu icon looks like a clock running backwards. If you don't have that menu, open the Time Machine preference pane and check the box marked

Thanks. I was able to select the external HD but TM saidd there are no backups on it so I guess I'll give up
