Boot Camp failed on 3TB Fusion - 1TB gone missing

Just tried to install Windows using Boot Camp on the new 3TB supporting version.

It hung at the partitioning stage, and I was left with a messed up Disk Image and about 1.2TB less disk space than I had before. I tried a full restore via Recovery Assistant, but now Disk Utility seems to think I only have a 2TB disk.

I went back in to Recovery Assistant to try a reinstall, and it again showed Macintosh HD as a 2TB volume, so doesn't look like that will solve the problem either.

Any ideas? I'm outside of my 90 days tech support so thought I'd ask here before paying for a call.

First of all, I doubt that the space has disappeared. Probably, Boot Camp resized your OS X partition but didn't create the Windows partition, so you have that "lost" space. To recover it, follow these steps:

1. Open Disk Utility and select the hard disk at the top of the sidebar.

2. Go to Partitions tab and you will see a bar similar to this:

3. As you can see, at the bottom right of "Macintosh HD" volume, you can select it, so put the cursor on it and drag it to the bottom of the sidebar. Finally, press Apply, and you will recover your lost space

RAM? I have 24GB of ram - not sure what that matters though, as windows 7 will run on 4GB ram upwards? Also not sure why you expect windows to occupy 50% of a 100GB partition - when it states it only needs 20GB?

If I was buying a PC , no I wouldn't buy one with only a 20GB drive - because I'd want to install applications, store my documents etc, so would need more than 20GB. But If you bought a PC and installed windows - which states it needs 20GB of space to install - and then noticed it had taken up 55GB of space, wouldn't you want to know why?

Same situ here. I have bought a iMac with a 3TB drive. I have assigned 320GB to BOOTCAMP to run windows and associated windows software. I was just a little suprised that the install of Windows 7 took up 55GB of that storage, when it says it needs a minumum of 20GB to install. So what did it put on the extra 35GB??? It seems like a large install for an OS that states it only needs 20GB. That's all I'm saying, and I was curious to why it created such a big install.

Apologies to Original Poster for this post going off in a tangent. But I have now installed Bootcamp and win 7 to 3TB fusion, and if anyone wants any feedabck to how its going please feel free to ask. And in meantime, if anyone has any idea why my win 7 install was 55GB on that bootcamp partition, please let me know, as its frustrating me a bit. It just seems too big for a standard win 7 install.

Cheers all

20GB is far too small, you can believe what you choose but that is a fact.

If you have 24GB of Ram your Windows installation has a 24GB hibernation file (hyberfil.sys) and a swap file of lesser but significant size, add those to the 20GB minimum) and see where your math leads you.

It might be worthwhile looking up some info on how Windows actually works rather than relying on estimated minima.

Thanks for info. Appreciated.

Though as a casual user of windows on a mac, I don't really want to have to take a degree in learning how its insides works before I install it. The pre-install guidance provided by both Microsoft and Apple suggest a min of 20gb.

I must remember in future to ignore the minimum size required info provided by the developers as clearly you know more. I guess as you say the additional space must be what's been allocated to swap file/paging file . But seems excessive.

Once again apologies to all for this thread becoming focused on windows install size. If anyone wants to bring it back to original topic, happy to answer any questions about how bootcamp install on my fusion went- and how it's performing now a few days in.

The hibernation file tends to be the biggest, obviously it has to equal the Ram size, not so much if you have 4GB of Ram, but 24GB is significant (larger than the intended partition size)

Always ignore manufacturers minima, they are Pipe Dreams. 🙂 Although you can install Windows in 20GB, you can barely use it that way.

I read that the part if the drive after the boot camp partition will not be utilised by the fusion drive, and that only the space before the bootcamp partition will fused. Any truth to that do you think?

No, but Windows on Fusion drives is (a) limited to the HDD only and (b) troublesome at the moment.

Appreciated. Just wished looking back i'd have allocated 400gb or even 500gb instead of 300gb. Only way now to do this would be to delete my bootcamp and go through it all again, and after the drama to install it in first place, think I'll stick with working in the the 245gb I have left in the Bootcamp partition.

Cheers again

Hi everybody, and sorry for my English. I have a problem with my iMac and 3TB Fusion Drive HD. I try to install Windows with BootCamp but process doesn´t finished. Now, I have a second HD ¿? in my computer. It´s not only a partition! It´s running like another HD and appears in System information like a second HD mounted in /Volumes/Untitled.

With BootCamp I can´t delete the new Untitled partition/HD. I can read in BootCamp "you have more than a internal HDD"¿? and, in both HDs I can read "It seems like another utility divided this HD and it can´t be deleted".

It´s terrible, but I can´t remove the partition with Disk Utility. I can´t do nothing, beause, incredibly, computer "thinks" that Untitled is another HD.

And Boot Camp is unusable until I remove the other false hard drive. I don´t know how to make the computer delete Untitled.

Thanks everybody.

I have a problem on my early 2011 macbook pro customized with core i5 processor and 500gb hdd regarding BOOTCAMP for Installing Windows 8 on OS 10.9 Mavericks

I tried to install windows 8 with bootcamp on OS X 10.9 Mavericks but while partitioning bootcamp was not responding and then i force quit it. After that i opened disk Utility and it showed no partitions for windows 8.

But then my HDD which had 210GB free later showed as 136.27 Gb free only. IT means that my partition was not successful and it took up 74GB on my HDD.

I dont want to erase my HDD and Reinstall OS X but want a solution to get my 74GB space back on my hdd without troubles of formatting and restoring from backup.

Plz Help Solution Needed Urgently.
