I have just copied all my iTunes files to an external hard drive to free up disc space but I cannot find the iTunes media files on my macbook to delete the originals, How do I go about finding them. Spotlight brings up nothing useful nor does finder search.

Nothing is missing in that article. It is very, very clear.
Open a Finder window.
Dont do a search.
Can you see Users folder?
Can you see your user folder?
Can you see your Music folder?
Can you see your iTunes folder?
Look in your Music folder. What is in there?
Take a screen shot and past it here.

I was puzzled by this and checked on my Macbook Pro at work and also on my wife's macbook and it is the same on them as well. I cannot see a Users folder, nor can spotlight or finder search find one.

At last ..... this is the vital information link missing in the instructions! I thought it must be hiding in some obscure sub menu.
My research over the last week has confirmed that there are a lot of people out there with the same problem. Does anyone know how one can approach the poster of HT1449 and suggest that these few words be added to the instructions. It would have saved me several hours research.
I have been a total Mac user for nearly 10 years now at work and play and this is the first thing for years that has caught me out.

This should not need to be included.
It really won't work as Music is not in the Go menu (my mistake).
If you open a Finder window, you should see your user folder on the left side as Frank pointed out.
Or Go > Home as Red Dwarf pointed out.
You also should be able to Go > Go to Folder and type Music.

It's now the iTunes Media folder inside the iTunes folder.

Hold Option.
Launch iTunes and select Choose library...
Select /Users/baltwo/Music/ then click Okay.
Now the iTunes media folder location should be /Users/baltwo/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/. (one less /iTunes Music/ folder).
(not a big deal since there is nothing in iTunes but if you use it in the future, it will be at the correct location)
If we're being really picky about getting it into the current layout, close iTunes and rename iTunes Music as iTunes Media then reopen and check the preference updated automatically. Then use File > Library > Organize Library... and tick the box Reorganize etc. if it isn't greyed out.

Right click > Show in Finder.
Or selec teh desktop.

Need to hold down the OPTION key to make the user's Library folder visible in that menubar option (peril of Apple hiding that useful folder from the common folk in Lion & ML).
'cept user is not trying to get to the Library folder, but to the Music folder.
Ooops. My bad, misread Red Dwarf pic. That's what I get for fixating on the stupidly hidden Library folder.
