Major Bug with Background Rendering freezing entire machine

I'm not sure how to report a bug to Apple. I believe others may be having this issue so I'm reporting it here.

There appears to be a fatal bug with "Background Rendering" in Final Cut X.

I'm running OSX 10.7.5

Processor: 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory: 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB

I noticed several times while trying to edit within Final Cut X, my machine would completely seize up. I could still move my mouse around, but I was unable to click on anything. The only way to resolve the situation was to hard reboot my machine. This happened dozens of times to me and was beginning to drive me insane. There was nothing specific that caused it... cutting, trimming, dragging, adding an effect, etc. It just kept happening randomly. I then realized there was a pattern... each time it seized up, my background tasks monitor was showing a percentage below 100% (as if it was working).

On a hunch, I turned off background rendering in my Preferences. Mine had been set to start after 5 seconds. A few weeks went by without the freezing issue.

About 10 minutes ago, I was working on a project and decided to temporarily turn on Background rendering... I forgot I had it on, and started doing some editing. Once again, my machine froze. I can now say with 100% certainty that background rendering is causing this freeze. I think what happens is that for some reason in the midst of editing, background rendering starts up (maybe because mine is defaulted to 5 seconds?) and then when I start editing while it's in the process of rendering, it confuses my machine and it locks up.

It seems to me that background rendering should cease if I start doing anything, but apparently it's faulty. If anyone is also experiencing this issue, try turning off the feature... it should resolve it for you.

Not everyone is having it. But I know for a fact that others have experienced it. A few weeks ago, I did a google search trying to find out if anyone else was having an issue with Final Cut X freezing up their entire machine (where all you can do is move your mouse), and found multiple threads, but no concensus on what was causing the issue.

I now know for a fact that background rendering is the culprit.

You might be right. But there is no reason to have background render turned on.

yes sir.... Background is a BAD name for that feature. It doesn't even render in the background. Background rendering implies that rendering takes place in the background while the user works in the forground. If, however, the user works in the forground, background rendering seizes.

Turn it off... And use ctrl+r to render whichever clip is selected in the timeline and use ****+ctrl+r to render the entire timeline!
