Powering an iPhone 5 from a Bosch eBike system

I am the proud owner of a new KTM Pedelec/eBike, powered by a Bosch system. This system provides a 5v power supply in order to charge a mobile phone via a micro USB port, meaning my SatNav software would not . I bought an adaptor to allow a standard USB cable to be connected. This solution works fine in the shop with the sales guys' Android phones, but it will not charge my iPhone 5 (lightning cable), my wife's iPhone 4, nor my iPad 2. I tried different genuine Apple cables with each of these three Apple products.

Anyone out there have any thoughts about a solution? Or even what the problem is?

Thanks all!

Just to clarify

at the power end you have a micro USB port

at other end an iPhone 5 with it's lightning port

If I understand correctly

Suggest

a USB cable with Micro plug at each end ( if available )

update ,they are on Amazon (UK at least )

an Apple lightning to micro USB adapter plug into iPhone

join with cable

It is not clear what you are plugging or how you are plugging into the iPhone

at the moment

So, bought an Apple lightning/micro USB converter, connecting my iPhone to my Bosch e-Bike 5 volt power supply using a micro USB to micro USB cable. Nothing doing, no charge, no error message, my iPhone just ignores it.

Any other thoughts out there - this is really frustrating, and having bought three different adaptors with no joy, it's getting expensive! Help!

Hi Peter

The Bosch unit is definitely providing 5v output as it charges Android phones no problem. However, taking a combination of my purchases, I've just tried the following chain: iPhone 5 - Apple Lightning to micro USB adaptor - micro USB to USB female adaptor - USB male to USB port of a desktop PC. That does not work. The same PC port does power up my iPhone with a standard lightning cable. I don't know what that proves, but it is interesting, isn't it? I know for a fact that every individual link of that chain is not faulty when tested with an Android phone, but somehow the iPhone does not like them! My wife's iPhone 4 doesn't work with any of these adaptors plugged into the Bosch unit either, nor does my iPad2 - I'd expect at least an error message saying that this component won't charge it?

This is like the techy equivalent of "House"!

Thanks for your help, anyway.

Best wishes

Have same problem so have contact yesterday Bosch E bike (on facebook) and today received an answer....

"It is possible to charge iPhone (up to generation 4S). The Intuvia dispaly has a 500mA, 5V current on a micro USB. In case your iPhone cannot be charged, please get in touch with your local dealer to check wether a software update is needed. Your Bosch eBike Team."

So tomorrow I go back to my dealer. Have also ask what latest software no it should be.

Keep you inform...

Hi Davincivb

Thanks for that. Bosch will not deal with me, only with a dealer. But they did tell me that the Intuvia display of the Bosch eBike system needs an upgrade to 4.1.0.0 Firmware. My dealer, Electric Transport Shop, are trying to get hold of this for me, but after 2 weeks, no success yet. Also - my display does not even power my wife's iPhone 4, which Bosch have told you that it should. Hmm. I think they have a bug in their software?

Thanks for posting!

I bought a http://www.sparta.nl/nl/fietsen/F13B2PS sparta B2 . It will get here on monday.

I'll see what it gives with an iphone 4S. If I can see it somewhere I'll also try and find out what version of the firmware is on my Bosch drive.

I have sent an email to Sparta and a mail to Bosch about wether it is possible or not , these are the answers I got:

(translate where needed , i'm sure you'll get the jist of it)

You'll havbe to translate the page though . This guy talks about E-Bike diagnostioc tool. I bet using that you can update the firmware if you have a copy of it. Maybe the mA of the usb port can be tweaked , i have no idea , it's worth looking into. If someone here gets their hands on a copy of this diagnostics tool, keep us informed about what can be modified plz.

Musings in general...

About Bosh...

If Bosh is going to add a port intended to charge phones and GPS the least they can do is attach the most common devices to their sparkly new port in their 2013 models and see if they charge.. It's not like nobody at Bosch has an iphone to test it with..

About apple...

A standard USB port has 500mA output .. make your devices able to charge with that amount of power , even if it's half as fast than if they were 1000mA.. There's a reason why they make standards.

Imo if it ends up not working , both Bosch and Apple are to blame for half of it .. I can't understand how things like this happen in this day and age.. This is the stuff engineers should get fired over.

Hoping this gets resolved , for both your and my sake.
