My iPhone 5 external speaker stopped working

I have a newer iPhone 5 (Verizon). My external speaker stopped working without cause? No changes in settings and no additions to programs or apps. Does anyone have a solution for fix or does this require the dreeded trip to "The Verizon Wireless" store? Thanks in advance-Cheeze73
