I do not have the system cd because I am travelling, just installed a new hard drive on my macbook pro 15-inch (early 2008). Need to get it working, do have another macbook 15, if I could connect via firewire to download, but don't know how.

Connect them with a FireWire cable, start up the computer with the new hard drive with the T key held down, and use a program such as the Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper to clone the existing system to it.

Connect the two using a Firewire cable. Boot the computer with the new drive into Target Disk Mode. Boot the MB from its Recovery HD. You can now use Disk Utility to partition and format the new drive. When that's completed you can then install Mountain Lion onto the new drive.
