What happens when you try to import the movie file into iPhoto? Are you importing from the camera and what camera is it?
I found my problem.
I have lately been trying to import with 60p PS, (wouldn't import)
But before I was using 24p FX, which did work.
I am importing with SD card, and Sony a65.
Nothing had happened when importing directly from iPhoto.
The computer kept saying wrong format.

Actually I have no idea. The camera's manual might discuss that. Otherwise they'll know in the iMovie forum.
