Q: My son got a new iPad (4) yesterday and set a passcode that he has forgotten. After many attempts it disabled the iPad. It's ready to go again now. How can I get the iPad working again? It's never been connected to my computer yet.

My son got  the new iPad 4 yesterday and before I had the chance to set it up on my computer via iTunes he set a passcode that he has forgotten. After his numerous attempts to figure it out it disabled the iPad. Now it is abled again, I need help to get pass this obstacle.  Can anyone suggest how to fix it now?

    Force it into Recovery Mode

    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.

    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.

3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.

    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.

Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

Even though its the newest iPad it's telling me to update to iOS 6.1.2

And it's running that.... At the same time a message from iTunes has popped up telling me it can't connect the iPad because it is locked with a passcode. That I must enter my passcode before it can be used.

Which is the problem... We don't know the passcode....

It did initially go into recovery mode and started to restore factory settings etc but these above messages have now appeared. Should I allow it to finish its update first? Won't this mean there will be no passcode so then it can connect with iTunes

Finish the update first and see what happen.

The recovery is being complicated with the update.

It says now cannot continue update as session time ran out or something similar to that.

So i started your suggestion again...

There's a message "  are u sure u want to restore the iPad to its factory settings? All data and media will be erased and the newest version if iPad software will be installed.

There are 2 options underneath... 1: restore and update or 2: cancel

I clicked restore and update which contacts the update server

    Then gives me this message

    " iOS 6.1.2

Fixes an exchange calendar bug that could result in increased network activity and reduced battery life.

For information on the security content of this update, please visit this website; http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222

    With three buttons underneath

    Save      Next     Cancel

Now the first time I clicked on next it began to update but then timed out

The second time I tried to avoid the update thinking it would be quicker just to restore so I clicked save

But that got me no where

If I click cancel won't that just put me back to square one?

    I'm so confused and frustrated

My guess will be to click next again which brings it to the iTunes screen where it was updating the software before it timed out.... And try again

No it won't finish the update coz it can't connect with iPad until i enter the passcode

So we are at a stalemate!

    Any other suggestions ??

Try and perform recovery without getting involve with the update.

I personal have never done a Recovery in tandom with an update, as such I am not too sure how we should proceed.

If you still have problem, I suggest you contact Apple for help.
